Ring of Total Freedom

The Legend of William Oh

Ring of Total Freedom is a Relic whose defining power is the gradual erosion of bindings. It grants +15 Focus, conceals itself on the wearer, and attacks restrictions across physical, mental, energy-based, causal, and Ability-based dimensions. In the hands of William Oh, it is not merely an equipment choice: it becomes a safeguard offered to Brianna when her freedom may depend on whether she can leave an obligation behind.

Properties and Operation

Ring of Total Freedom is designed to make restraint less absolute. Its effect slowly wears away Physical, Mental, energy-based, causal, and Ability-based Bindings, giving the wearer help against grapples, adhesives, engulfing attacks, and slow debuffs. The same property allows the wearer to fit through spaces significantly narrower than would otherwise be possible. Its usefulness therefore extends beyond a single escape technique; it operates continuously against the conditions that turn movement into confinement.

The Relic scales with Focus and provides +15 Focus, a substantial enhancement in the immediate scene. It also carries a Reactive effect costing 1 Charge: the wearer can dive into a mental projection of the Self. The item is consequently both defensive and inward-facing, combining resistance to external restriction with an ability associated with mental projection rather than simple physical force.

William Oh’s Gift to Brianna

William Oh reveals the ring through a deliberately theatrical gesture. He closes his hand, overlays his Phantom Hand on his ordinary one, and produces one of the rings he has stolen in his palm. After asking whether Brianna is permitted to receive gifts, he offers Ring of Total Freedom to her directly, explaining that he would feel better if she wore it.

Brianna’s first response is to measure the Relic against her own worth: its description makes her feel that it must be worth more than she is. William Oh dismisses that objection by saying that he stole it and that no one else will know she possesses it. He also notes that he does not have equipment slots to spare on edge-case Relics, presenting the transfer as practical inventory management while the surrounding exchange makes its protective intention unmistakable. The ring is valuable, but its immediate value lies in being placed on Brianna rather than retained by him.

Freedom Under Contract

The gift is prompted by Brianna’s Contract. William Oh confirms that it expires when she reaches her destination, and the ring is offered in case she later decides to quit. The Relic thus enters the story at the point where contractual obligation and personal freedom overlap: it does not formally cancel the Contract, but it gives Brianna a means of resisting physical or supernatural consequences that might follow an attempt to leave.

William Oh’s concern is sharpened by an intrusive image of the Tangled: a young Climber around their age whose tortured body is covered in restraints from head to toe. That image transforms a seemingly theoretical escape aid into a response to a known danger. His sudden thought of something else he must buy is a lie, and his repeated command that Brianna wear the ring shows how strongly he wants its protection in place before they depart.

Concealment and Immediate Consequence

Brianna eventually accepts, sighing as she slips the ring onto her finger. The band fades into her skin and disguises itself, fulfilling one of the Relic’s practical advantages while preventing casual observers from identifying her equipment. She immediately notices its +15 Focus and characterizes the increase as “double-dailies,” recognizing that the object offers more than an emergency escape function.

The scene ends with the ring installed and hidden, not displayed as a trophy. William Oh and Brianna then turn toward their next objective: saving Loth from Carrie. The transition gives the Relic a clear narrative role. It converts William Oh’s anxiety into a concrete protective measure, equips Brianna before a dangerous departure, and allows their movement into the next conflict without announcing to others that she now carries an artifact dedicated to freedom.
